JUST FYI FOR FOLKS LOOKING FOR
 PIONEER
CS-99, CS-88a, CS-77a & 66G
MODEL SPEAKERS.
Pioneer, for some reason used foam surrounds on the tweeters of these models, CS-66G, CS-77, CS-88a & CS-99. After 20+ years, it will be difficult to find a pair that still has the foam intact (as foam surrounds generally have a useable lifespan of 10-15 years, depending on the environment they have spent the majority of their lives in). 
Almost 100% of the models we have seen have their tweeter foam rotted. WE have searched high and low for a 16 ohm replacement for the CS-88a, or an 8 ohm for the 77a, with no success.

However, you can now replace the foam your self.

    The tweeter just to the left is from the CS-77a. Looks good, but surround is rotted.


A visibly fine surround, is still bad and will visibly deteriorate after a few songs are played on them. We see these at on-line auctions often, and in every case the speakers either still have their rotted originals or a replacement tweeter, of some-sort installed. Due to the rarity of 16 ohm tweeters, we have to assume that the replacement tweeters the owners / sellers have installed are of incorrect impedance, which at the least, effects high-end efficiency (volume) & at worst can create load issues for whatever amplifier they are connected to. All this while using the word "Mint" or some similar adjective to list / describe the speakers. 
Again this is only prevalent in CS-77a, CS-88a and CS-99. It is not a factor with CS-77, CS-88, CS-99a, CS-33a, 66a or 901a's.

PS. We also see a similar problem with many other manufacturers' speakers like the Bose 301, 501, 601 & 901 speakers from 15+ years ago, except for the earliest versions of their speakers which used cloth surrounds. 

Any manufacturers' speaker utilizing foam surrounds (common from typically 1980 thru present) that is over 10 years old should be suspect, but the above mentioned models are almost a given.

PSS. Even though a speakers foam surrounds may "look" fine, they probably are not! Vintage speakers posted for sale by individuals & at auctions / yard sales have commonly not been in use for many years (other wise they probably wouldn't be for sale). In many cases, once you start playing them more than a couple minutes, you can watch the foam disintegrate right before your eyes, just by playing 2 or 3 songs at above average volume levels.

Mid sized Pioneer 3-way loudspeakers. These are the slightly advanced "e" version of the classic 66's. Classic "Wood lattice" look. All Pioneer-built components. Their 3-way design features:

- Air Suspension cabinet design for tighter bass over the "A" version 
- 10" Woofer with non-deteriorating surround #25-11F
 - 6.5" non-deteriorating cloth surrounded Midrange #16-81F-1
 - 2.75" Cone Tweeter #77-40
- Vented Woofer for higher efficiency
 - Binding Screw speaker inputs
- Real Walnut Wood veneer cabinets and lattice grills

 These speakers are rated at 98dB!!!!
Great speaker for a small-mid sized system for for running with that vintage tube amp, where you need great efficiency combined with the vintage look of real wood. The cabinet design is Air Suspension with a vented woofer dust cap for added power efficiency. Original real wood Walnut veneer in decent condition with only a few minor "battle scars" (see above photos). One of the input terminals have had the lugs changed to screws. Cabinets and grills are of real Walnut veneer and have just had a fresh, hand-rubbed coat of Bees wax and Lemon oil. We also added poly-lam gasketing around the back panel, prior to re-installing to reduce the possibility of sympathetic vibrations and further seal the cabinet acoustically. We also replaced the original fiberglass insulation with poly-spun batting material. We have completely tested them including sweeping them with an audio generator looking for any acoustical anomalies or extraneous noises or sounds. These speakers sound great.  Each measures 22.25"h x 12.25"w x 11.25"d and weigh 24 lbs unpacked. Includes our 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering)!
